The cost of attendance (COA), also known as the student budget, reflects the student’s average cost of attending Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The COA does not imply the actual cost of attending HMSOM but consists of direct and indirect costs.

*Important: Health insurance requirement and estimated premium including administration fee. The State of New Jersey requires all full-time students attending an institution of higher education in the state to be covered by health insurance. Disability is a mandatory fee. Health Insurance can be waived if a student has alternative, comprehensive coverage.
*The annual parking fee is now a required fee for ALL students. The fixed fee across all cohorts/years of instruction (e.g., M1-M4) is considerably lower than the most expensive rate last year, but overall revenue to support the erection of the parking structure is held constant.
Disability Insurance is a mandatory fee (which had been set at $55.20 in AY22) The premium for disability insurance is subject to change for 2022-2023; the new rate will not be known until after May 1, 2022.
All charges are billed in two increments (July and January) except for the Health Insurance and Disability premiums which are charged as a one-time fee when July billing occurs.
Indirect Costs:
Books and Supplies: Students’ estimated costs school supplies, clinical equipment including, recommended stethoscope, lab coats, scrubs, etc. The cost of a personal computer is not included.
Transportation: This relates to student costs getting to and from campus, clerkships and required activities. The transportation allowance cannot take into consideration expenses related to owning a car or relocating to NJ.
Loan Fees: Based on a 1.057% origination fee charged on an average medical school total borrowed through Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans (for loans disbursed after 10/1/21); Loan fees and interest rates are subject to change on 10/01/22 and 07/01/22, respectively.
Room and Board: Living expenses related to student housing either at home or off-campus. This includes meals, utilities, and food expenses. The living allowance is a 12-month budget.
