ILP Process and Content
Overview
The Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) is designed to tailor each medical student’s scholastic experiences to best meet his or her unique educational and professional goals. The focus of the ILP process is to reflect on the educational aspirations, needs, and experiences of each student – and to best maximize their opportunity for success. Accordingly, the ILP content emphasis will vary throughout the duration of medical school to reflect the experiences, successes and challenges, and short and long-term aspirations of each student. The ILP process will include:
- self-assessment
- curricular experiences, including academic achievements and challenges, and related formative and summative feedback,
- identification of vocational interests
- short-term and long-term goal setting and tracking,
- decisions regarding specialization (including residency-track) and plans for the purpose and content of each student’s Phase 3 experience, and
- customized linkage to resources.
The purpose of the ILP is to best prepare each student to identify and succeed in their desired career-trajectory as a physician.
ILP Process
Individualized planning begins prior to orientation with a brief survey of student interests and a self-assessment. This is followed by regular (scheduled) meetings with students and their advisors to update and revise each students’ plans. We expect that the ILPs will change as students are exposed to the many established and emerging career options in medicine, as well as the numerous academic, research, clinical, and community options that may enhance their specifically desired practice of medicine.
• The ILP is student driven and centered with input and assistance from his or her advisor
• The ILP is structured on the following competencies:
- Self-Care and Wellbeing
- Patient Care
- Knowledge for Practice
- Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Professionalism and Professional Identity Formation
- Systems-Based Practice
- Interprofessional Collaboration
- ILPs will measure progress in goals that are I-SMART (Important (to you) Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely). Some goals will be mini (achievable in weeks/months/quarters); medium (achievable in phases/years) and major (achievable in medical school and beyond
- All Students must identify and explore – well in advance, potential options for their individualized Phase 3 experience
- All Phase 3 plans will include a structured clinical component
- Requirements for specific certificate and dual degree programs in Phase 3 will vary and may include additional application and completion requirements which are determined by the partner School, College, or Program
- Other options, such as rearranging courses, or pursuing other clinical activities will be available on a case-by-case basis
