Phase 1 Teaching Opportunities

We are excited to have you as a Faculty Member of the School of Medicine (SOM). We are currently recruiting clinical faculty to be involved in the delivery of our Phase 1 Curriculum. Given the vision for the school, and the goals of the curriculum, having clinical faculty involved and integrated into the entire curriculum, including the pre-clerkship curriculum, is critical to the achievement of our goals. Phase 1 spans the first 16 months of the curriculum, and includes classroom, clinical, and community-based experiences, with the focus on gaining the foundational knowledge and skills from the Biomedical, Behavioral, Social, and Health System Sciences that students will use and apply throughout all Phases of the curriculum, and their future careers.

There are a number of opportunities for faculty to be involved in the delivery of the curriculum. The School will provide a stipend to the clinical department/practice or faculty member to support the teaching time for clinical faculty. To show interest in teaching, please fill out the form on our Appointments and Promotions page

Clinical Skills Small Group Facilitator

The Clinical Skills Small Group Facilitator (CSF) will facilitate a group of eight students every other Wednesday morning (Year 1) and/or Tuesday morning (Year 2) over the course of the Phase 1 (pre-clerkship) curriculum. The CSF will be responsible for debriefing experiential activities including simulation sessions and clinical placement visits and developing student skills in these critical areas: patient and team communication, history and physical examination and diagnosis, diagnostic reasoning, utilizing labs and imaging, oral presentations, and documentation in the EMR. The CSF will also coach their students to guide the development of core clinical skills and professional identity.

This opportunity is appropriate for an MD/DO with training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, or General Surgery with a minimum of 3 years professional practice experience and excellent communication and physical examination skills.

Human Dimension Small Group Facilitator

The Human Dimension (HD) small group faculty will facilitate a group of eight students every other Wednesday morning (Year 1) and/or Tuesday morning (Year 2) over the course of the Phase 1 (pre-clerkship) curriculum. Sessions will consist of debriefing and processing students’ HD experiences through workshops, case presentations, and reflection activities. Faculty will mentor students as they work with families from vulnerable populations and will help student teams complete a community assessment project. Examples of monthly themes of the HD course include professional identify formation, social determinant of health, barriers to care, community systems, substance abuse, and mental illness. This opportunity is appropriate for an MD/DO with prior clinical experience.

Problem Based Learning (PBL) Small Group Facilitator

The PBL Small Group Facilitator will participate in the small group teaching within the Problem Based Learning (PBL) component of the integrated case-based curriculum at the SOM. The PBL curriculum is a weekly component of Phase 1 that will help students develop their skills in clinical reasoning and self-directed learning. Faculty will be provided with extensive faculty development in preparation for this role.

The PBL Facilitator will lead a group of 8 students on Friday mornings during the pre-clerkship curriculum.

This opportunity is appropriate for a MD/DO with training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, or General Surgery with a minimum of 3 years professional practice experience and excellent communication skills.

Occurs Friday mornings. Faculty will choose teaching units of 4, 5, or 6 months, and are encouraged to teach multiple units.

Longitudinal Clinical Placement Preceptor

Students will have several Longitudinal Clinical Placements as part of the Phase 1 curriculum to reinforce and practice history taking, physical examination, and communication skills. Longitudinal Clinical Placement Preceptors will be responsible for guiding students in this placement, utilizing their clinical practice as a clinical teaching site. Preceptors will also mentor students in their adaptation and acculturation to the profession of medicine.

Students will have between 3-12 sessions with differently preceptors over the course of a year in varied clinical settings, approximately one afternoon every other week. Students will be provided with appropriate training to complement their office-based and inpatient tasks throughout the course and will be able to contribute to the clinical team at their sites.

This opportunity is appropriate for a MD/DO with training in medical specialties that can provide a broad introduction to caring for patients in diverse clinical settings. Preceptors must be able to excellent communication and physical examination skills.

Students will come to the clinical setting in the afternoon; which day of the week is flexible and coordinated between the preceptor and student.
